ABOUT MARTON SCHOOL
OUR HISTORY
Marton School has its roots back to 1825 when a one-roomed shack was opened as a schoolroom. In 1866 a two roomed building was erected especially for the purpose and official recognition was given.Until 1901, when it became a District High School, the school consisted of a Primary Department with a separate Secondary Department.
The present site in Hereford Street was purchased in 1910 and the school was officially opened by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. W.F. Massey, in 1913. The District High School remained until 1958 when the Secondary Department moved to its present site in Bredins Line.In 1971 Rangitikei Intermediate opened using the buildings and grounds of the Hereford Street site. Marton School has remained a contributing school until the review. The roll of the school reached its peak in the late 1960's with over 700 pupils.
